    Features – Cover Story

Finland’s Kuusakoski Recycling celebrates 100 years of processing increasingly complex materials streams.

    Lisa McKenna March 6, 2014
Collectors and generators of end-of-life goods, vehicles and electronics as well as mixed construction and demolition scrap may believe these varied streams are far too complicated to be handled by just one recycling company. However, it’s just these sorts of complicated separation tasks that have become the collective specialty of Finland’s Kuusakoski Recycling. What’s more, the family-owned international recycling services company based in Espoo must be doing this complex job right: Kuusakoski is celebrating its 100th year in business in 2014.The company’s 1,400 employees working in 75 international locations specialise in sorting, separating and processing just about any material stream that can be recycled. While most of these materials tend to be metals, the commodities produced are by no means boilerplate, having been upgraded as they are for Kuusakoski’s mill, foundry and smelter customers located throughout Europe and beyond.Today, Kuusakoski processes electronic scrap, end-of-life vehicles, construction and demolition materials and their related counterparts. From these varied streams, the company produces a variety of end products that includes ferrous and nonferrous metals as well as precious metals, plastics and refuse-derived fuels.

    A rich history

Being able to survive through difficult jobs—and difficult times—is a trait that apparently runs deep within the Kuusakoski culture. Today the company is by many accounts considered one of the largest industrial recycling companies in all of Northern Europe and is certainly one of the region’s most well-known.

The company got its start in 1914 in the town of Vyborg, in eastern Finland, which was then part of the Russian Empire. It was a complicated time when Finland was struggling for independence, which it would earn just a few years later.

  • Technica Unites with SolarPV TV to Boost International Cleantech Industry

Leading cleantech services firms align to provide comprehensive suite of marketing, public relations, social media, web and video solutions

San Francisco, CA — October 18, 2013 – As an emerging sector, much of the green economy remains hidden from mainstream attention. In an effort to provide greater exposure for the solar industry and other cleantech sectors SolarPV TV and White Gorilla Media have joined forces with leading cleantech PR and social media firm Technica Communications to offer turnkey promotional solutions to companies around the world.

“The solar industry is growing exponentially, year after year. As the number of solar energy customers increase, so does the competition for their attention and business,” said Adisa Ziric, VP North America & International Relations at SolarPV.TV, a worldwide TV platform for solar PV business and technology. “By strategically aligning our services with Technica Communications, we offer our clients new opportunities to cost-effectively spread their stories of success to new customers, partners and investors, as well as gain leadership in increasingly competitive markets.”

The three leading service firms will draw on the strengths of their collective cleantech expertise and individual marketing services to offer a suite of options to clients and companies looking to gain market traction and larger customer networks. SolarPV TV’s worldwide distribution platform and White Gorilla Media’s top quality video, web development and graphic design will supplement Technica’s public relations and social media management services. In turn, Technica will support the two firms with top notch media exposure solutions. Together, the firms offer clients centralized lists of high quality marketing services companies can utilize to gain market traction in an increasingly competitive industry.SolarPV TV newsroom

“With such saturation in today’s media landscape, companies who are not actively promoting their story to existing and future customers are leaving money on the table,” said Lisa Ann Pinkerton, Founder and President of Technica Communications. “To succeed in cleantech, especially solar, you have to be seen and understood. There is still a lot of educating to do. Without a marketing outreach strategy that includes public relations and video, companies find it very difficult to gain market traction. We are excited to align with SolarPV.TV to offer direct opportunities for our clients to share their successes with the world.”

The two firms will unveil their new suite of cleantech marketing solutions at Solar Power International 2013 in Chicago, IL October 21-24. This year marks the four year anniversary of SolarPV TV and the five year anniversary for Technica Communications.
